What I found in the dark

Deep in the dark ‘wet n wild’ woods of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, I found a cabin with a fireplace for my winter vision retreat -

- and there I sat for a week, tending the flames of both the fire and my vision.

This was several years ago, while deep in the throes of burnout, after many losses I still sometimes grieve, wondering if all I had built so far was only going to result in my ruin.

But one late night, after hours of meditation, journaling and listening to the land, the idea for the EarthCare Compass came to me like a lightning strike of clarity.

I spent all night drawing it… discovering layers of alignment within all that I’d studied for decades, from the nature-based wisdom of elements, seasons and growth cycles, to Jungian archetypes, the chakras of ancient India, musical scales, mathematical symbols, the 8 forms of capital, and so much more (hello, pattern recognition, lol).

While the tool itself felt like it all arrived at once, the reality is that it emerged from deep ecological work with my hands and heart, listening to the land in many different places, and a lot of trial and error.

I spent years researching, refining, and testing it (in my own life and business) until it came together in a way that I felt confident in sharing it with others.

You may recall when I shared it a while back. I tested it with others, got their feedback and learned how to speak about it more clearly so it would be useful to anyone, anywhere.

Now it’s clear, simple, and so easy to use, that I can’t keep it a secret.

Everything I’ve created since developing the EarthCare Compass follows its wisdom.

When we start with Awareness, we build understanding through observation. But if we stay there, we fall into information overload, paralysis, or burnout.

Connection is the key. When we move into reciprocal relationship with a Place, a person, anything, we discover what is truly needed and then we can offer something mutually beneficial.

Then we can move into Action, informed by awareness and guided by relationship itself. Not aimless, angry, activism, clouded by all that is wrong, but mindful action grounded in all that is well.

And from that place, true ecological Impact becomes the natural and emergent outcome, which inspires a return to deeper Awareness, and the sharing of this process with others.

I have witnessed this work, over and over again, with hundreds of clients, students, collaborators and mentors.

Because this tool has been so effective, I created a program to support anyone in the world to use it.

Imperfectly and humbly, I'm sharing it today for the first time.

And you, Reader, are invited to join the founding circle.

With an even more beautiful compass...

I've never been hit by actual lightning, but I know what it feels like to find a light in the dark and have an epiphany that changes everything.

Discovering the EarthCare Compass was that for me, and I know there's a moment of clarity, vision and impact waiting for you on this journey too.

Stay wild and wonder-struck,

Kendra

Ps. I hope you will join me this year, as a founding circle member, to provide essential feedback :)

They’d gotten too hot in the sudden spike of weather this weekend, and needed to be relocated to a cooler area… without shocking them into heart-attacks. One by one, we gently carried these 40+ panting birds into deeper shade, cupping handfuls of water at their beaks, to offer them a drink (which was relieving to watch being slurped up). Most of them made...

It doesn’t require a yard, knowledge, equipment, or expertise, and it doesn't cost you anything. It asks only that you show up, sit down, and stay a little while. It’s called a Sit Spot. And this is how we do it (did anyone else hear Montell Jordan in that? lol) - Choose a place where you can see and hear the natural world: in the forest, under a single...
