I was in a dark place

Today I want to acknowledge the insanity of the world (especially many of our leaders), and speak to the the grief and overwhelm we are all carrying. It's a lot. It's heavy and intense. A lot of it is soul-crushing.

I used to live in a very dark place, internally, back when I first realized what the leaders of the world were up to - when I also believed the lie that the human species was like a cancer on this planet, just expanding empires, consuming resources, and devouring each other with so little regard to life.

But that's not the whole human story.

The majority of humans all through time are exactly the opposite of that. Realizing that we are part of Nature, a beautiful creation born of love, and the perfect solution to the problems we create (if we remember our true nature), changed my life. This is the new and ancient story, Charles Eisenstein talks about.

The old story, the way our leaders have run the world into ruins, is collapsing.

Spring is a time rich with potential, and it's more important than ever to plant seeds of HOPE in "the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible." Don't let anyone tell you it's not possible.

This is a special edition of EarthCare Matters. I only do this once per season.

I’m listing events and resources, so you can practice moving from overwhelm (yes, it's an info-dump email) into real, grounded impact. There's a tool and guidance offered too.

Save this email so you can come back to grab resources as needed.

Spring also teaches us that collapse offers space for new realities to emerge.

And if we, who are relatively safe in our homes right now, don’t continue to hold the vision for a better world, and don’t use our time wisely to make real, tangible steps to build that world into reality...

...who will?

It will have to be us.

This is our time. This is our responsibility. This is our ecological role.

AND, dear Reader -

Spring invites us into this role, as if it's a dance, an awakening, a shedding of winter, with delight.

It is the perfect time for -

  • curiosity, creativity and playfulness
  • envisioning a new story for ourselves and our kin
  • glimmers of joy and childlike wonder
  • planting seeds of hope for a more beautiful world

… all of which can feel extra hard, while juggling the polycrisis.

It's important to slow down, sit with our feelings, ideally with song, dance, story or silence (the 4 universal healing salves, according to Angeles Arrien, PhD), and from that grounded place we can take more solid steps toward real, tangible impact.

This is why we have the EarthCare Compass. To help us find our way.

This tool helps us navigate from awareness (which often causes overwhelm) into CONNECTION, before we take action, so that beneficial impact is possible.

Connection is the missing piece, round the world, Reader.

When the headlines get loud and the state of the world feels heavy (awareness-overload), I invite you to remember the wisdom of Pema Chodron: "start where you are" (in your Place) and lean into the power of connection and relationships.

Learn more about how to use the Compass here in this Free Intro to EarthCare Audio Class.

I will show you how to use it to move through overwhelm, at the end of this list!

2026 Spring EarthCare Resource Collection

It's Spring Ephemeral Season!

Every year I plan a trip with my parents up to their raw land in Perry County to witness the wild native spring ephemeral flowers and shoots as they pop through for a fleeting moment. It reminds me of my childhood.

Exploring healthier wild ecosystems is an important part of this path,to remind us of the goal, so I'm planning to develop more guidance for you.

Mini Quest: Visit one really wild Place and discover what's different there. Bonus: Take children with you and learn from them too this Spring.

EarthCare Library UPDATE

This month, Sara Rose, Morgan and I are working on a very fun addition - Attracting Allies: Guide + Checklist. Library members get this delivered.

This resource is relevant for gardens and our lives right now. It's more important than ever to cultivate allies all around us, no matter where we live.

Not a member yet? Join here to get the guide: Attracting Allies (pdf).

From My Practice to Your Place

How to Talk to your Arborist about Snags - one of my favorite things to protect and facilitate for wildlife like bats, owls and other allies.

How to CleanUp Mindfully and what that means this time of year for you, wildlife and your neighbors. EarthCare says they all matter.

Why We Don't Spray Weeds and What to do Instead. Spoiler alert: it's NOT a "natural" cocktail of dish soap, vinegar and salt.

Why Nature Wants to Plant Trees + Shrubs in the Fall (not now).

20% off - 2026 EarthCare Calendar - use code CALENDAR20. Or get 30% off, when you show up to my live workshop - details below <3

This printed, wall-hanging calendar is still quite useful for 9 more months. All the information provided in Jan-March is still relevant, and it's a way to get ahead of next year too. It makes me really happy to see it on my wall and calls me outside more often. Mission accomplished!

We’re also getting ahead of next next year’s calendar (2027) by asking you to capture spring photos and submit them to get featured. We always need more photos of early spring with native plants, insects, birds and wildlife.

Check out the photography requirements here!

A Reckoning: Girl Boss Apology Tour
Virtual + Free

Did you read my newsletter last week? It was a story about when I scammed my friends, because I was following bad business advice, and the long road of apologies and self-forgiveness after.

My friend Tarzan Kay, a community song leader (pictured with her hands up, face full of joy) and consent-based marketer, is hosting a FREE 5-day event to have honest conversations about business, the mistakes that were made, and how to do it better.

After years of weeding through the swamp of girl bosses and scams myself, this is a breath of fresh air. The speakers at this event are the kind of people I learn from now, if you're curious. And I'm now really proud of the way I make my living.

Whether you are building a business or not, this event will be a real look behind the curtains at how the world of business is changing FOR THE BETTER (ie. a dose of hope).

📅 April 22 | 2026 Earth Day!

This year, the theme of Earth Day is “Our Power, Our Planet,” honoring that environmental progress is built through everyday practice and focusing on how local, community-led action is the most resilient response to global shifts. That's what EarthCare is all about!

It is also the week between our workshop and Q&A where I will invite you to ponder in Nature, metabolize, and begin to define your ecological impact goal after our workshop <3

On my Locals List, I am sharing resources to help you replace "invasive" plants for free, monitor our nearby nuclear plant's regulations (yeah, 3-mile island is my neighbor), and more.

If you want to get emails that focus on local action in central PA, join the Locals List here.

📅 April 25
Ecological Grief Song Circle
In-Person Location (PA) - TBD

For many of us, the world has felt heavy, and one of the best ways to regulate our nervous systems is to use our voices, together. I am still finalizing the details on my first in-person song circle in PA!

A song circle is open to anyone, regardless of singing experience. You can even just sit and listen! The songs will be super easy, and not about performance. Community singing is about being messy, imperfect, and ok with it.

I do not have a great voice, am still struggling with fear around singing in front of others, and hope that makes you feel extra welcome. Are you interested in joining? Click here to let me know.

🎙️ Podcast Episode | The ancestral medicine of reciprocal relationship with the Earth

Kay'aleya Hunnybee, a clinical herbalist and integrative health educator, invited me on her incredible Herbal Womb Wisdom podcast last week!

We talked about returning to the roots of our roots, how to find small joy in big grief, and how to choose which actions are meaningful and worth our time.

Enjoy an hour of embodied earth wisdom the next time you’re on a drive, or want something nourishing to listen to. Also, I sing at the end - a peek into what the grief song circle will hold!

→ Listen to this beautiful conversation.

You don't need to do all of the things, Reader.

As you look through everything I've shared here, I invite you to use the EarthCare Compass to choose what you want to read, explore or do. Are you stuck in awareness-overload? Move into connection. You will find your way.

The question to ask yourself is: "who and what can I genuinely build a relationship with?"

Start there, not with the biggest action, but with the deepest connection available to you right now. That's where real change begins, and it ripples outward in ways we can't always predict or measure.

And if you feel confused around how to do that, I am offering guidance in 2 free live workshops this month.

Stay wild and wide-eyed - there is beauty all around,

Kendra

P.S. What are you curious about? What new stories are you ready to grow together?

Which plants are coming up in your Place? I’d love to see!

Feel welcome to reply to this email with photos to celebrate the season of Spring.

Did someone forward you this email? Subscribe here. Sunday afternoon I found myself on a chicken rescue mission with some local friends. They’d gotten too hot in the sudden spike of weather this weekend, and needed to be relocated to a cooler area… without shocking them into heart-attacks. One by one, we gently carried these 40+ panting birds into deeper shade, cupping handfuls of water at their beaks, to offer them a drink (which was relieving to watch being slurped up). Most of them made...

It doesn’t require a yard, knowledge, equipment, or expertise, and it doesn't cost you anything. It asks only that you show up, sit down, and stay a little while. It’s called a Sit Spot. And this is how we do it (did anyone else hear Montell Jordan in that? lol) - Choose a place where you can see and hear the natural world: in the forest, under a single...
