are ya listenin?

The notes floated in so clearly, as I sat on a rock ledge, listening to the wind.

Are ya listenin? Are ya watchin? Are ya waiting? For direction?

It was an experience so ethereal, I still struggle to put it into words, but effectively, I was in a song circle with the wind and trees atop that mountain as a winter storm was brewing.

And I caught the sweetest song.

This spot, among the white rocks of South Mountain’s ridge near the midpoint of the Appalachian trail in Pennsylvania, has been a retreat of mine since childhood.

I go there to hike off my frustrations, and wander into solutions that I couldn’t access just banging away at the keys on this screen. I highly recommend stepping outside, taking a walk, or getting off grid, whenever you feel like you can’t figure something out.

To get alone or “thinking” time in nature, I prefer going out during the work day, on rainy/cold days, or near sunset, when all others are heading back home before dark. I particularly love being up on that mountain when the world falls into darkness (with my headlamp lol).

I feel so comfortable in this place, only about a 15-minute drive away, I could find my way home in almost any direction. The land is literally connected to the land where I now live and where I grew up, along one continuous ridgeline. And I can feel that in my bones. It feels like safety.

The familiarity of this place, as well as the soothing nature of wild places, allows me to encounter my own inner world in a unique and surprising way. I can surrender to something wider and wiser, while simultaneously feeling myself expand into the unknown territories of my mind, body and soul, without as much resistance. I think this is why clarity comes with ease.

When we feel we are safe and belong, while being slightly challenged out of our comfort zone (which is often the daily grind), whole worlds open up.

But, no matter how hard I try, there’s really no sufficient way for me to describe in written words how it feels to belong to a Place. So I’ve begun to brew up ways to facilitate the experience for you and share it with you more directly, Reader.

If you’re a creative entrepreneur like me, you’re invited to join me on a special day I’m co-facilitating with Zoe of Wild Minds called Encounter the Wild Unknown.

We will spend the day together in this beloved place of mine, to reconnect with our visions and the purpose behind what we do for our daily work, with Nature in the lead.

Zoe and I will gently guide the group to sit, wander, journal, get curious about the “wild unknown” areas within, and discuss what’s on our hearts and minds. We’ve both been practicing this kind of exploration, and witnessed how transformational it can be, to step outside the ordinary. I can honestly say this is one of the most beneficial practices I’ve ever cultivated in my business.

So much clarity and inspiration has come to me through these encounters.

I will share the song this mountain shared with me, and perhaps a few others. You will be welcome to join in, without any expectation to sound “good,” or simply listen.

Zoe is a therapist, wilderness guide and experienced retreat facilitator, and we are both looking forward to holding this space open for you too.

You don’t have to be a 6-figure company founder, or even actively running a business. If you consider yourself creative, entrepreneurial and interested in finding guidance and clarity through connection with Nature and others like you, this is your invitation.

And, it’s on a Monday, which we know is technically a work day, but we also know you’re a rebel with a cause, you have more control over your schedule that the average bear, and you can decide to invest this time in yourself and your creative ventures.

This is more of a day “on” than a day off. Like, really on, tapped in, connected, in the flow state. I consider this kind of activity part of my working life now.

In fact, I can’t afford not to do this frequently anymore, with how often it has helped me get unblocked. My business and creative endeavors have thrived as a result.

So, you’re invited to join me in this Encounter of the Wild Unknown.

And if this isn’t for you, you’re invited to find time to explore the land around you in this way too. Anyone can do this, like I do, on your own. It’s easy, accessible, free and fun.

Find a hiking trail you love (or somewhere new) and plan to spend a few hours there.
Take your notebook, some water, snacks and leave your phone behind.
Wander with a question in mind, and let the living world “distract” you from it.
Allow yourself to get lost in the moment, in a flow state.

Inspired solutions always come, even if later.

This is a core part of my EarthCare practice and philosophy.

And I hope you tell me about it, when you try it!

Stay wild,

Kendra

Ps. Don’t worry, if you’re not a “creative entrepreneur” I’m creating other ways to connect like this. That’s what we creatives do! Haha. But I need to start by nourishing myself in this way, sharing what I do with others like me. Thanks for understanding.

If you’re local, or can travel here, I am designing day camps and retreats. And I’d love to know what you’d like to experience or learn at these live, in-person events. Click here if you’re just interested in any in-person events I design or Hit reply to tell me what you want!

If you’re not close enough to attend live events easily, you can try the Sit Spot Challenge - a 3 day email series I share often for newcomers, and like to remind ye old faithful readers about too. Try visiting different spots consistently or seasonally and see what emerges.

It’s great to get back to the basics, and if you need fresh inspiration (because you’ve gone through the same emails over and over) just hit reply and let me know.

This week I had a real strong desire to ask you if you know why you’re here? I’d love to hear why you read my emails (like, why you’re here on this list), but even moreso, I’d love to hear why you’re here on this planet. In other words: What is your purpose? And if you don’t know, or it doesn’t sound grand in your mind, that’s ok. I’d love to hear that too. It’s ok to hit reply and tell me you don’t know, you’re tired too, it’s been a long year (and it’s only mid summer haha), and the...

Reader - It’s been another long week. It was a long hard Spring, and it's already been a long year... or five, hah. There's smoke from wildfires (due to long term mismanagement of land) making outdoor work a little more challenging than it already is in 90 degree humid weather... and there are creeks trickling with fresh cool water, bird songs in the morning, and bright beautiful flowers in our gardens. eye spy the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on the Echinacea! This is an extremely honest email...

Sitting on a raft, with a few family members, in the middle of the massive pacific ocean, I looked into the night sky to find the southern cross on the horizon… ...there it was… bright and beautiful… the beacon we desperately needed, to find our way home… Thankfully, this was just a simulation I attended a few summers ago… not a real life survival scenario!!
